Hockey Ultimate Team is a card collecting game mode in NHL. You can earn cards by collecting coins by playing the game and then opening card packs from the store. Cards could also be obtained by completing sets of cards by trading in specific players or collectibles for an upgraded version or another random card. Build your dream roster of players and challenge others to see whose team comes out on top.
HUT Challenges were a new feature in NHL18 and became one of the primary aspects I focused on. I created over 300 varied themed objectives for challenges in preparation for the game's launch. Following the release, Challenges remained a central highlight for events, as they presented a new method to engage users with continuous fresh content.
Events were a big part of Hockey Ultimate Team for NHL. We crafted new events each month and released new players almost daily. Events would normally be themed towards current hockey events like the Stanley Cup playoffs, IIHF Tournament and other real world happenings, but sometimes they were themed towards the season like the winter holidays or Halloween. We would create special themed player cards and collectibles to earn in Challenges or other areas of the game or to be purchased from card packs. Some events had a unique feature to them, like the Winter Holidays event where there was an advent calendar that had unique rewards every day.
Mid way through the NHL18 Season, in February of 2018 we released HUT Champions. HUT Champions was a new competitive mode where the top players in Hockey Ultimate Team would have a chance to compete for the highest rewards. To qualify for HUT Champions, you would need to win a Division 1 Title of Online Seasons or place top 1,250 in one of the two weekly qualifiers. If you qualified for HUT Champions, you would play a series of games over the weekend trying to earn a top spot on the leaderboard. If you placed top 250 after the weekend of HUT Champions, you would automatically qualify for the next weeks HUT Champions season.
The rewards had high end player packs, lots of coins, as well as content for any themed events that were actively running at the time.
